The Australian Open is set to undergo a major transformation in 2024, making it a unique and extended sporting spectacle. This significant change comes in response to growing concerns over late-night finishes and aims to benefit both players and fans.

Starting on a Sunday in 2024, the Australian Open will become a 15-day event, spanning from January 14 to January 28. This expansion will make it the second Grand Slam tournament, after the French Open, to adopt a 15-day format. The move is primarily driven by the intention to reduce late-night matches that have been a recurring issue.

In recent years, matches have stretched well past midnight, causing discomfort and fatigue for players, officials, and spectators alike.

Notably, the 2023 Australian Open featured an epic second-round match between Andy Murray and Thanasi Kokkinakis, concluding at 4:05 a.m. Players and fans have criticized such late finishes.

Tennis Australia has responded to concerns about late-night matches at the Australian Open by implementing several crucial tournament scheduling changes. These changes are designed to enhance the overall experience for both players and fans.

The most significant adjustment is the extension of the tournament's first round to span three days instead of the previous two. This change allows for a more even distribution of matches and reduces the pressure on players to complete multiple rounds in a shorter timeframe. It also helps prevent late-night matches that can be physically and mentally taxing for everyone involved.

During day sessions at the prestigious Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena, the number of matches will be reduced from three to a minimum of two. This change aims to limit the potential for late-night finishes, ensuring that fans and players can enjoy matches without the risk of games stretching into the early hours.

While these changes address daytime scheduling concerns, it's essential to note that the scheduling of night sessions, often a source of late-night matches, remains unaltered. Matches that commence at 7:00 p.m. could still extend late into the night, impacting player performance and fan experience.

Craig Tiley, the tournament director, stresses the significance of taking feedback from players and fans into account. He emphasizes the aim of ensuring a fair and equitable schedule for the stadium courts.

Though there may still be difficulties in managing late-night matches, these changes represent a significant milestone towards enhancing the overall scheduling of the Australian Open. This will also help in reducing the probability of prolonged late-night matches.

Despite this, the extended 15-day format provides an extra day for fans to enjoy the tournament, with more sessions on the three main courts. The organizers anticipate increased revenue from tickets, merchandise, and other areas due to the additional day.

With its new Sunday start, the Australian Open's transition to a 15-day event in 2024 marks a significant change in the tournament's history. While efforts have been made to minimize late-night finishes, some challenges remain, particularly regarding night sessions. Nevertheless, this shift aims to enhance the overall experience for both players and fans and solidify the Australian Open's status as a premier sporting event on the international stage.
