At the 2023 Met Gala event on Monday (1 May), tennis superstar Serena Williams showed off her baby bump and confirmed that she is expecting her second child.
The 41-year-old professional tennis player attended the event together with her husband and daughter. She excitedly told reporters at the New York fashion show when she arrived with her husband Alexis Ohanian she said: there were "three of us" on the red carpet. In a TikTok post on Monday, Williams said she was "so excited that Anna Wintour invited the 3 of them to the Met Gala".
The couple had their first daughter, in October 2017. She was already expecting her first child, Olympia, while she was winning the 2017 Australian Open. Olympia is five years old now.
Meanwhile, the expectant mother had earlier informed the public in Vogue Magazine last year that she wanted to move away from tennis for a while to focus on growing her family.
During her first delivery, Williams had an emergency cesarean section because of her baby's dangerously slow heart rate during labor. Also, the day after giving birth to her daughter, Williams suddenly was short of breath. Having experienced such a life-threatening incident in the past, she does not want to take any risk in it anymore.
The American's tally of 23 Grand Slam
The American's tally of 23 Grand Slam singles titles was the most by any player in the Open Era, and Serena won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, one more than fellow Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) candidate Steffi Graf and one behind Margaret Court who had won 13 Slams when only amateur players were allowed. Court (1970) and Graf (1988) were the only two women to win calendar Grand Slams with the German's gold in Seoul which secured her a unique 'Golden Slam'.
In 2003 and 2015, Serena held all four Slam titles at the same time with the feat known as the 'Serena Slam'. After returning from childbirth in 2017, Williams reached consecutive finals at Wimbledon and the US Open however, she lost all four matches with the most recent being her 2019 US Open final defeat to Bianca Andreescu.
Last year, Serena played at US Open where she knocked out second seed Anett Kontaveit before falling to Ajla Tomljanovic.
Serena Williams was coached by her parents Oracene Price and Richard Williams along with her older sister Venus, who also has seven Slam singles titles to her name and, continues to play on the WTA Tour. The siblings won three Olympic golds with Serena taking singles gold in London 2012 and a 14 Slam doubles title together as well
